Excluding Folders in a Backup

$

I have a script that runs as a scheduled task. This is the line in the script that starts a backup:

WBADMIN START BACKUP -backupTarget:\\BackupStorage\backup\BackupA -allCritical -include:c:,d:,f: -vssfull -quiet  >> D:\BackupLogs\backupLogsForA.txt

I now need to exclude two folders on the D: drive. It is my understanding that with the -allCritical switch it will ignore -exclude.

My question is, what will I lose if I replace -allCritical with -SystemState and then add the excluded folders? Can I still recover from bare metal with this backup?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Rick

Event ID 51 on Windows Server 2012 R2 during backup

Hi all,

During backup operations, on my Windows Server 2012 R2 (Hyper-v role installed) I find this warning in Event Log:

Event ID 51: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk5\DR43 during a paging operation.

How could I solve this issue? or Could I safely ignore this message?

Just for information, before latest OS Update Rollup installation, we also found the event below:

Event ID 157: Disk 5 has been surprise removed.

Thanks a lot,

David

Size of Backup Larger than Original Source

Hi all,

probably a very simple answer here but i've recently installed Windows Server Backup on a server. Backuping to a network share works well enough but i've noticed that the size of the backup is a decent size larger than the original source. e.g. backing up a 266 MB folder has resulted in a 314MB folder on the fileshare. Likewise a backup of a 122 MB folder has created a 216 MB folder on the network share. Is there any set logic/ratio to how much bigger the backup copy will be? Had a hunt around online but couldn't find anything.

Thanks for the help!

Test recovery of Windows Server Backup fails

I am testing "bare metal" recovery of backups from a Windows Server 2012 machine.  I have already tested restoring individual files, and I am able to successfully restore those from the server.

What I have done is to start another machine off the Windows 2012 installation DVD and attempt a bare metal restore.  I went into repair, and then system image recovery.  I attempted to restore from a network file share.  It finds no backups. I also copied the Windows Image Backup folder to a local drive in the other machine and pointed it there.  Nothing.

I then pressed shift-F10 to open a command prompt.  I ran

wbadmin get versions -backupTarget:\\[servername]\k

Where [servername] is the name of the server and k is the share. I get the message:

No backup was found.

If I do a dir on the path, I can see WindowsImageBackup and then a folder with the server name under that, and further down.

If I do wbadmin get versions from the server itself, it lists the backups properly.

What am I doing wrong?

Backup Software

Hello All

Recently I was using windows NT Backup on server 2003 to do my regular file backup. This would include backing up files on different servers by using a network map drive. Now I have upgraded to windows server 2012 and using a HP LTO Tape Drive. Seeing that I have upgraded to windows server 2012 I cannot use windows NT Backup to conduct my backup and the server backup that comes with the server 2012 does not allow me to use network map drive to conduct backups.

Is there any free software that I can use which will allow me to do my backups via network map drives and save the data to a tape?

Sincerely

R.D.Reid

Panicking now: Server 2008R2 restore failure

I backed up my entire file archive without the OS in Windows Backup. The backup was 2.1TB and the files were organized in such a way as to make retrieval of individual files easy. The idea was that I could use this archive to make targeted selective restores that would save time and bandwidth. Windows backup tells me it can't read the directory! How can this be? Where is the problem and/or the fix?

Additional notes: The archive file was moved a few times as drives were replaced but there was never an indication of file corruption.

Scheduled Backup not running consistently

Using Windows Server Backup I setup a scheduled backup on Server 2008 running Exchange 2007.  It ran as scheduled until 5 days ago, when it stopped running in its entirety until this morning.

There is a gap in Windows Server Backup between these dates. The backups do not fail as they do not run at all. Although each day in WSB the backup says it is scheduled for that day.

In the Scheduled task for the backup there are no notifications between the 9th and the 14th.

When the task has started today it seems that it has attempted to run the task several times. Which resulted in a number of failures.

I have followed the step to change the task limit within the registry in this other technet post to no success.

Scheduled Backup not Running

Using Windows Server Backup I setup a scheduled backup on Server 2008 R2 running Exchange 2010.  It ran as scheduled until 5 days ago.

The backup stopped running nightly.  Each day the backup management screen shows that a backup is scheduled for that night, but the scheduled backup does not run.  When I check each day, the next scheduled backup is shown as the backup for the evening to come; the last scheduled backup that ran successfully was shown as the last backup.

Even though backups are not running, there are no unsuccessful backup attempts listed in the recent backups list at the top of the utility.  There are also not any failed backups in the event logs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello,

I have backup established via wbadmin. I start backup with command "wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backuptarget:D:", by this command I will create maximum 3 versions. When 3 versions exist and I run the command, the oldest version is deleted.

What I'm missing here? Why the oldest version is deleted? I want to keep more versions.

The OS type is: Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise.

Thanks in advance,

How would be wbadmin command?

Thanks.

I want to automate the cleanup of backup versions. I am just backing up a folder to test with.

Wbadmin start backup  -backuptarget:\\testsrvr\BackupTest\bkup02 -include:E:\temp -quiet

I can script the delete of the remote shared folders, but I also want to delete the catalog entry that references them. The -quiet just suppresses the prompts.  There is no -force option. I have tried "echo y|" but there are 2 prompts. I don't want to run this command manually.

I know that I can delete the entire catalog with "wbadmin delete catalog -quiet", but I want to keep the current entries. Or doesn't it matter and I should just delete the entire catalog?

And as a side question, why can't wbadmin delete the backups in the remote shared folder? I've manually deleted the folders before I run the delete backup command and wbadmin still says that it can't delete the backups.

Windows Server Backup 2008 R2 Offline Disk Names

$

As you add offline USB disk drives to Windows Server Backup 2008 R2 to use for backup, WSB composes and assigns disk (volume) names to each drive as you add it. The name is composed of the server name, timestamp, and the string DISK_nn.

The first drive you add will be DISK_01, the second DISK_02 etc. If you have two disk drives in the backup set, and you remove DISK_02, the next drive you add will be DISK_03 and not DISK_02. So it appears that the names are not recycled.

After using several drives in testing, I want to start over and have the actual drives I'll use for 'production' labeled properly and in sequence. How can I tell WSB to reset the name sequence back to DISK_01?

Additionally, where is this configuration information being stored? A search of the registry did not find the disk labels currently in use. Is there any way to control the next DISK_nn number assigned?

Thanx in advance. Geoff, Fredon NJ

Windows 7 backup/restore strategies

Dear all,

After a sudden death of the drive in my PC due to the (then) famous hard drive firmware bug I started to getting very worried on running backup regularly. I did have regular backup to the most important files from one partition to another partition, but that was all gone because all of them resided in the failed disk.

After a month of chaos, I finally realized that was a bug in the firmware and sent it to the vendor for the drive recovery. Now I got it back and bought another drive for backup purpose, the next best thing to do is the all-time important: the backup.

Knowing that the only way to create a VSS backup for all the volumes in disk 0 to disk 1 is wbadmin, so I have:

wbadmin start backup -backuptarget:e: -include:c:,d: -vssFull -quiet

When doing the end-to-end testing for the restore, the only way I could (instead of GUI):

wbadmin start recovery -version:08/31/2010-20:58 -items:d: -itemtype:Volume -backupTarget:e: -recoveryTarget:d: -quiet

C:\>wbadmin start recovery -version:08/31/2010-20:58 -items:d: -itemtype:Volume -backupTarget:e: -recoveryTarget:d: -quiet
wbadmin 1.0 - Backup command-line tool
(C) Copyright 2004 Microsoft Corp.

Warning:  The START RECOVERY command is not supported in this version of Windows.
The operation ended before completion.

C:\>

Can anyone point out that this is the best approach in terms of backup/restore in Windows 7 (x64 Ultimate) using Microsoft's VSS implementation? The start recovery command seems not supported, what gives? Or I overlooked something in the Windows backup/restore GUI tools? Thanks in advance :)

Hi Everyone!

This is my situation;

SBS 2011 Standard (VM) on Esxi

Windows Server Backup is configured to backup too 2 x external disks

This completes the data backup for the system drive and the data drive.

However when it gets to the VSS Backup it all falls over, this is the error in the Windows Server Backup, I have tried running this both from the scheduled WSB Application and from a scheduled bat script.

Below is the last few lines of the WSB Event logs via Command Prompt.

I have done some research but havent found anything relating to the specific failure (RPC Service is unavailable)
I have gone through and checked all of the key services (RPC, VSS) and all of these and the dependencies are set to automatic.

Please help :)
