We've been running out of space on our CSVs. I determined that the hidden System Volume Information directory is huge. It is huge because of large VSS files in the directory.

been searching back and forth, still no luck for a solution.

Hi buddies.

Maybe you know how to solve this problem I'm getting. I have a backup policy in my server, that makes a full image. I'm able to restore that image (using the windows cd) if it's located in an USB HDD, but if I try to load the image trough a network share, the quoted error message appears...

Any idea? I've tried in different servers, locations, sharing permisions...

Thx!

Hello,

When I run Windows Server Backup or any backup software that uses Microsoft VSS my domain controllers crash. I get the following events when this happens. Server patches are up to date and I ran:

Sfc /scannow

Dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

these above commands did not fix the issue

back up to external hard drive not working

under settings, when I click back up my files, under backup options, I click "back up now". It appears to start, as it says "backing up". 30 seconds later the "backing up" disappears and back to the same button that says "back up now". Using the same external hard drive as I have in the past. It says my external HD has 931 GB available, and the back up size is 86.2 GB.

The backup failed. The RPC server is unavailable (0x800706BA)

After the Windows 10 version 1803 upgrade on April 30, 2018, my System Image Backup keeps failing withe two messages. "The backup failed" "The RPC server is unavailable (0x800706BA)".

Note that the System Image Backup worked before the upgrade. The upgrade completed OK and I have not found any other issues.

I checked that =1= The RPC (Remote Procedure Call) service in Services is active and running and =2= the DCOM (Distributed COM) is enabled. There used to be a SYSTEM disk when I did the defrag, the defrag does not show the SYSTEM disk in version 1803.

Is it a bug, or is there a fix or should I try the Image Recovery (that might fail as well).

Windows Server 2019 backup works to second server but can not recover.

Attempted to do backup 2nd server data section and then recovery.

In Windows Server Backup selected: Backup Once, Different Options, Custom, Add items, select Bare metal recovery, Ok, Next, Remote shared folder, Server., \\server1\folder (left default Inherit), Next

The backup was listed as completely successfully.

I tried to restore by booting from Windows Server 2019 disk. Selected Next to Windows Server 2019 window. repair your computer, Troubleshoot, System Image Recovery, Windows Server. But the only backup is one done to bare metal recovery USB drive earlier and no sign of the backup just done.

Tried Select a system image. Again only earlier backup is seen.

Tried Advanced..., Search for a system image on the network, Yes to Are you sure you want to connect to the network, Entered the \\server1\folder

Then I am getting enter credentials.

Does not look like a place to enter credentials. The script has passed by User Name: and Password.

Closing the windows gets remote procedure call failed. 0x800706BE

I have recorded the backup settings and the result is the same.

Cannot restore from dedicated backup drive on Server 2016

$

I'm really hoping someone can help out, as I'm going a bit crazy.

When I had set up the backup schedule for my WinServer 2016 domain controller in Windows Server 2016 Backup, I had it dedicate a virtual drive to backups.

The file for the virtual drive is called "Domain Controller Backup.vhdx" and is sitting on a backup drive mounted to G: on the host Windows system, FREDHOST (for purposes of this discussion).

Unfortunately, the vhd file for our domain controller got corrupt, so I'm trying to restore.

When I try to boot into the server, called DC1 (for purposes of this discussion), it cannot successfully boot and takes me to the troubleshooting options (as you would expect).

The problem is when I try to use System Image Recovery (in troubleshooting options), it just will not find any backups.

I have the backup virtual drive mounted to the virtual machine (via HyperV Manager) just as I did when it was successfully doing backups. However, it won't find any backups.

When I run mountvol in a command prompt, it shows multiple volumes, but none have a subdirectory called WindowsImageBackup.

I've tried making the virtual drive available via a network share (\\FREDHOST\G) and accessing via the network location option in System Image Recovery. It seems to see it, but then asks for ID and password. No matter what I enter (including a valid ID/PW for the host machine), it says its an invalid ID/PW. (Frankly I don't think this route is the answer, since I have a dedicated virtual backup drive.)

What do I need to do to get to my backups?!

Do I need to mount the dedicated backup drive a different way? Am I going to have to create a new 2016 Server and load from the Windows Server Backup interface?

I've seen a bunch of articles on the 'net, but none seem to address dedicated backup drives.

Thanks for your help.

Windows server 2019 backup DPM and WSB

$

Hi All

We have upgraded from server windows 2012 to windows server 2019 data center. New server, clean install and are using VM’s for the first time in Hyper-V and in the past we used the windows server backup (WSB) tool that is on the dashboard. Our VM’s are running DC AD with roaming profiles, file shares, DHCP, DNS, SQL etc.

I have been reading about it. There is Data Protection Manager (DPM) and WSB. We only have one server that runs all the VM’s.

Can we backup the host server using WBS and will it backup all the VM’s and file etc?

Or use DPM to backup the Host or backup the VM’s only?

What would be the best way/method to backup everything?

Thank you.
