Some backups complete successfully, others finish with warnings. Double-clicking the job in Windows Backup on successful jobs opens the logs. Doing the same on SOME jobs that failed display the following error: FX: {811FD892-5EB4-4E73-A147-F1E079E36C4E} Object reference not set to an instance of an object. System.NullReferenceException. We have ran SFC /Scannow, but the error continues. What is Microsoft's response to this?

Backup deletion troubleshoot

Hello

We have a Windows Server 2012 machine that runs a VSS full backup daily using Windows Server Backup to a dedicated partition.

It's been running fine for close to 2 years now and was automatically clearing old backups when space was needed.

We used to have about 250 backups available but for some reason even though there was space available it deleted all of them about 3 weeks ago.

I now have about 15 backups available and again even though there is enough free space it doesn't seem to retain all the backups it should.

I can't find anything useful in the logs and as far as I understand it there is no way for me to specify the backup retention period.

I would appreciate any help you can give me in troubleshooting this issue.

Thank you

Volsnap Event ID: 25 and Loss of Previous Backups

I have a Windows Small Business Server 2008 machine being backed up using the Windows Server Backup utility.  The backups are being made to two external USB attached 1TB drives.  Each drive is rotated out weekly, meaning that one drive is attached one week, then the other drive is swapped in the following week, ad infinitum for the best part of a year.  Two backups were being made each day to the attached drive, one at 12pm and one at 9pm.

About two weeks ago it appears that one of the two drives reached capacity and began shedding the oldest backups, as confirmed by the VOLSNAP Event ID: 33 entries in the System Event log.  On the second day, however, ALL shadow copies on the attached backup driver (volume) were deleted, as confirmed by a single VOLSNAP Event ID: 25.  (See below for both Event ID message contents.)  Unfortuneately, neither events were noted until the drive was swapped out with the other drive and some how the problem was propagated to the second drive, resulting in the deletion of all shadow copies on the second drive, too.

The end result... BOTH drives lost ALL previous backups leaving only the most recent full backup and no clue as to why it happened or how to prevent it from happening again.  Virtually no older backup file versions could be recovered.

I was under the impression that, by design, the WSB utility would only start deleting the oldest backups (on a full drive) in order to make room for the newer backups.  Granted, had I been keeping attention, I would have actually swapped out the full drives before the actually got full, so that NO data was deleted.

If I'm to continue using the Windows Server Backup utility, I need to know what happened and how to absolutely prevent it from happening again.  I never expected to loose BOTH backups at the same time, and due to budget restraints, two rotating backup drives seemed a logical solution.

Here is text from the two VOLSNAP Event ID messages found in the System Log:

Event ID: 25
Source:  volsnap
Level: Error
Description:  The shadow copies of volume \\?\Volume{93896cfc-d904-11dd-8cb5-001ec9ef572e} were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time.  Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied.

Event ID: 33
Source: volsnap
Level: Information
Description: The oldest shadow copy of volume \\?\Volume{93896cfc-d904-11dd-8cb5-001ec9ef572e} was deleted to keep disk space usage for shadow copies of volume \\?\Volume{93896cfc-d904-11dd-8cb5-001ec9ef572e} below the user defined limit.

NOTE:  Though I'm not sure if this has any bearing on the situation, the server is configured to make two snapshots a day of two volumes on the server, however, when I looked at the Shadow Copy settings I couldn't quite be sure if the VSS wasn't somehow also making snapshots on the two external drives, even though I haven't specified VSS to do so.  None show up on the two replacement drives I'm now using, so I'd say not.

Information on how to prevent this from happening again would greatly be appreciated.  (I'll be making sure no backup drive gets even close to being full from now on, that's for sure!)

Thanks,

Joseph.

Windows server backup fails

hi,

We have an issue with our Windows Server backup on our main server. It fails every evening and it shows the drives (5 drives for each day Mon-Fri) to be offline even though we can access the data and restore files/folder. We have tested another backup software with one of our drives and it ran successfully. The event log shows error event ID 561 and 546 "...the backup failed as no target could be found...", Windows/Backup/Operational, Event ID 19 & 49.

Any ideas what's causing this? As I said we ran successful backup using one of the drives and another software so I don't think its a hardware problem.

Please note we have tried many solutions found on the internet - with no luck.

Thanks in advance

Query Regarding upgradation from Windows server 2003 to 2008

Window Server 2012 Backup (WSB) failed 2155348010 using a WD Red 3TB drive in an external usb 3.0 docking station

What is the solution to get past this Windows Server Backup (WSB) failure and error 2155348010? What is the correct process to have WSB use a 3TB external drive with 4096 sector size as the destination drive?

I am using a Western Digital (WD) Red 3TB drive in a usb 3.0 docking station as the WSB destination disk with the recommended destination setting (which appears to setup fine, but the schedule job fails after 385gb, so something worked).

The similar job works fine with WD Red 1TB drive, so it must be the 4096 sector size vs 512 size difference and VHD.  I know there has been work done with 2012 to use 4096 sector size drives, but is this available in WSB with vhdx?  Can vhdx be used instead of vhd with Windows Server 2012 Backup, and how to do it?

WD has a Quick Format tool which may work to emulate 512 sector size, but WSB reformats a new disk, so how to use the WD tool with WSB accepting the WD formatting?

There is a lengthy discussion at the following post (immediately scroll to the end), but not specific to Windows Server 2012.  What is the MS recommendation for version 2012?

DPM causes BSOD of storage servers

Hi, we're running DPM2012R2U UR6 off a W2012R2 server.

We're trying to backup a clustered file server running W2008R2 with FC attached SAN volumes. After every volume DPM backups the server goes into a BSOD. Debugging shows me:

BugCheck 1000007E, {ffffffffc0000005, fffff80001c90b10, fffff880023b4e28, fffff880023b4680}
Probably caused by : volsnap.sys ( volsnap!VspQueryNtfsFreeSpaceBitmap+2fb )

Googling around tells me it's not supporting volumes larger than 64TB (none of ours are larger than 10TB).

Anyone got any ideas?! I've crashed the file server 6 times the last 12 hours and reaaaally don't want them to crash anymore :)

volsnap.sys is now at v6.1.7601.21854 after I tried to apply a hotfix that seemed to be related. (KB2627052)

Edit: Actually this only happens when an iSCSI volume is attached to the server - and this volume IS larger than 64TB though it's not apart of the protection group and thus...

This might be the wrong forum for this - but it's only happening now when we've introduced DPM to the system.

Windows Server Backup for Server 2008 R2 Virtual Machine - Keeps Failing!

Hi,

We're attempting to back up parts of a Windows Server 2008 R2 installation running under a virtual machine (*). We've tried using the Windows Server Backup that comes as standard with 2008 R2, but haven't been able to get it to work.

Accessing the server via Remote Desktop, I attempt to back up a folder onto one of my local drives (showing as a network share on that machine) but get "Backup failed to complete" and "The requested operation could not be completed due to a file system limitation". (The share is writable via the server, as I can create and edit a new text file there).

The Event Log isn't much more informative:-

The backup operation that started at '‎2015‎-‎05‎-‎18T10:44:13.093750000Z' has failed with following error code '2155348041' (None of the source volumes were backed up.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

Any hints as to what might be going wrong here would be appreciated- thank you!

Need assistance in troubleshooting Windows Server Backup on SBS2008

I'm experiencing consistent Windows Server Backup failures and need some assistance in troubleshooting the problem. The backups usually die about 1.5-2 GB into about a 500 GB backup. The logs haven't provided any real detail other than "backup failed". VSS appears to be working properly. I understand that the trace files can be read by Microsoft support to provide better information. Would someone be able to help me troubleshoot this issue?

Incremental and Full backups using WBADMIN and Task Scheduler in Server 2008 R2

I'd like to create an automated rotating schedule of backups using wbadmin and task scheduler, which would backup Bare Metal Recovery; System State; Drive C: and D: to a Network Share in a pattern like this:

  • Monday - Incremental, overwrite last Monday's
  • Tuesday - Incremental, overwrite last Tuesday's
  • Wednesday - Incremental, overwrite last Wednesday's
  • Thursday - Incremental, overwrite last Thursday's
  • Friday - Incremental overwrite last Friday's
  • Saturday - Full, overwrite last Saturday's

I need to use the wbadmin commands within the Task Scheduler and do not know any of the required Syntax to make sure everything goes smoothly, I do not want to do this through the CMD.

Shared VHDX and crash consistent-state backup

Hi ...

I'm A DBA, the Microsoft provide support for Shared VHDX in 2012. As you know we can run Windows Failover cluster on shared VHDX. Some backup software is taking backup of these VMs under some limitation like cannot use snapshots.

One of these limitation is using VAEEM. they backup VMs in crash-consistent state which mean simply an image can be compared to the state of a VM that has been manually reset. Unlike offline backup,  I don't know  if this is O.k with Microsoft SQL server backup

I would like to hear from Microsoft as shared VHDX is a MS technology.

Backup technology using snapshots okay if using VSS?

$

I know for domains that aren't at domain functional level 2012 you cannot recover from snapshots due to problems with USN rollbacks.  With 2012 and newer hypervisor technologies that has been fixed.

We are looking at some different backup technologies that use VMware snapshots as part of their solution (Veeam and Unitrends to be precise).  I want to make sure that I understand something correctly.  Snapshots are a problem with Domain Controllers, but if the backup technology is VSS-aware, the USN rollback issues are taken care of.   A more generalized statement would be:  using snapshots on a DC is okay as long as the application taking the snapshot is VSS-aware.  Is that a correct statement?

Server 2012 Backups

We are just upgrading from Server 2003 where we used ntbackup. As we have <75mb of data to backup I created a schedule to backup the data daily to a usb drive. Each days file was named to the day of the month, ie; Daily01-31 and the external drive was one of a set of 3 drives that were rotated monthly.

Is there a way to replicate this procedure in Server 2012?

I much prefer full, standalone backups to incremental backups.

Thanks

Backing up Windows 2012 R2 Core - Error when launching Windows Server backup remotely

I have machines with Windows 2012 R2 Core with Hyper-V role installed which is part of 2-node Hyper-V cluster. I've installed a Windows Server Backup feature on these core servers. I am using another separate windows 2012 R2 machine (with GUI) remotely and tried to perform a "backup once" on my Core servers and receive the error "the parameter is incorrect" as soon as I click on the "backup once" .  Any one experiencing the same issue? Previously I am able to backup the same machines using the same method before I created the cluster. Backing up via powershell (Start-WBBackup) is fine but cannot perform the same steps via GUI Windows Server Backup from a remote machine. see below for error when clicking on the "Backup Once"
