Windows Backup - the filename directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect? When editing a job

$

Hi all,

I'm remotely trying to configure a Windows Server Backup job.

We added new drives to the server but we need to ensure that the drive will be getting backed up. So I've tried to edit the current Windows Backup Job and received the following error message:

windows backup the filename directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect?

I've tried to research this error but alot of post refer to adding additional backup drives not resolving editing current backup jobs Ive also tried removing old drives but end up with the same error message.

Thanks in advance

Windows server 2012 Datacenter VSS event ID 12289 & 8193 Error

Hi Everybody,

I have on my hyper-v failover cluster hosts the same error (server 2012 datac).
All my writers are stable and no error.
All updates and hotfixes I have found are installed (I think :P).
When selecting the backup (volume snapshot) in settings of the vm's the backup fails.
Settings of the VM under “management” select “Intergration Services“. Deselect “Backup (volume snapshot)“.

When deselecting the box the backup will run and complete succesfully.
However I still want to fix the issue and want to backup the vm's without the downtime.

The error appears when running Windows server backup (WSB) and the 3rd party arcserve backup software.
Also when going to properties of C:, shadowcopies, settings and pressing on the Details button.

Error box:

Failed to initialize the Details dialog for Volume C:\
Error 0x80042306: The shadow copy provider had an error. Check the System and Application event logs for mote information.

Does somebody have a fix for me?

A while ago I posted another question but that down not work anymore:

Can't stop Windows Server Backup

$

Server 2008 R2 SP1 using Windows Server Backup connected to NAS via iSCSI. Scheduled nightly backups have been working correctly for over a year.

A running backup has been stuck for 12+hours with the message "Removing deleted items..." There is plenty of storage available on the NAS.

Attempting to cancel the job via GUI brings up another window "Please wait..." with a progress bar continually looping from 0 to 100%. Running cmd as Administrator using wbadmin stop job,  prompts Yes or No , answering Y doesn't responds with a blank line. I can't reboot the server until the weekend, are there processes or other services I can try to stop?

VSS writers inside virtual machine 'CONTOSO' failed to perform BackupComplete to its shadow copy (VSS snapshot) set: Catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF). (Virtual machine ID 9851BE14-F276-459D-8D60-DF73B67EB658)

What does it mean? Writers on virtual machine are OK and all backups are successfull. Every day I have one 10172 event for one backup in Hyper-V-VMMS event log.

VSS Writer failures during VM backup of server with Oracle application installed

$
0
0

I am experiencing problems with Hyper-V backups on one of our VMs which has the Oracle application installed.  I use DPM 2012 R2 but have also tried this with Windows backup which fails as well (hence posting it to this forum).  The Oracle VSS Writer is not installed on the server and the VSS writers which fail (timeout) are the following:

System Writer

ASR Writer

Shadow Copy Optimization Writer

WMI Writer

Registry Writer

IIS Config Writer

COM+ REGDB Writer

After initial investigation I have discovered that when the customer runs a script to stop the Oracle processes / services it seems that the WLS_Reports service / processes are causing the problem as when stopped by the script the backups run successfully but when running the backups fail and the above VSS writers timeout (further errors in the thread posted in the DPM forum linked at the bottom of this).

I have also noticed that when I stop the Hyper-V Volume Shadow Copy Requestor the backup runs successfully but connectivity to the server briefly times out which is not an ideal solution.

When the backups fail I get 2 errors in the application log on the VM:

Event Id 12293, VSS - Error calling a routine on a shadow copy provider {GUID for the Hyper-V IC Software Shadow Copy Provider}.  Routine details PreFinalCommitSnapshots ({GUID}, 5) [hr = 0x800705b4, This operation returned because the timeout period expired.]

Event Id 19, vmicvss - Not all the shadow volumes arrived in the guest operating system.

I also get other errors and symptoms which I have posted in the DPM forum here: Backup fails for a Hyper-V guest with VSS Writer failures using DPM 2012 R2 - Hyper-V guest has Oracle application installed

I know that the fact this server experienced no problems with backups before Oracle was installed and is successful when the WLS_Reports service is stopped would lead people to assume that the cause is related to the Oracle service but I need to know if there is anything from a Windows / Microsoft point of view that I need to be aware of which will help me resolve this issue.

Thanks

Chris

Volume Shadow Copies - Visible Previous Versions

Hi guys,

I hope that you could help me.

I have a problem with the number of the visible Previous Versions. We already change the number of the copies to 256 following https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb891959(v=vs.85).aspx#maxshadowcopies . What I found was that there is a limitations of the visible previous versions for Windows Server 2008, 2008 R2 and it is fixed in 2012 and 2012 R2. Is there any way to change the number of the visible previous versions? I found some suggestions to disable SMB2 but it's not recommended an I don't want to do it.

Thanks in advance

Problem creating scheduled taks, Task Scheduler cannot create the task

Hi, I have a problem when creating a scheduled task in Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard x64 which is client of Windows Server 2003 SBS.

When I click finish on scheduled taks wizard the following message appears: Task Scheduler cannot create the task. The user account is unknown, the password is incorrect,or the account does not have permission to create the task.

I tried both local administrator and domain administrator with no success.

P.S. According to other forum I tried to install subinacl and run these three commands from a cmd.
cd\
cacls c:\windows\tasks /T /E /P Administrators:F
cacls c:\windows\tasks /T /E /P SYSTEM:F

These commands grant full permissions to the tasks folder for the user group Administrators and the user System.

After these commands the situation is the same as I described above.

HI,

When setting up windows server backup there are options for backup to disk and backup to volume.  I have a usb drive to backup to.  WHat is the difference between backing up to volume and disk when backing up to usb drive.  Is there performance difference or difference in way backup is performed, copies, etc.?

Windows Server Backup of Folder Redirection

$

Hello,

I have a Windows Server 2012 backup that backs up user's redirected folders. The redirection policy give users exclusive rights to their desktop and MyDocuments on the redirected folders.

The issue I have is that when I try to restore, I cannot expand the desktop or MyDocuments, apparently due to permissions. I am logged in as administrator but administrator does not have access to the redirected folders desktop and MyDocuments subfolders.

My question is, does the Server backup use LocalSystem to back up? If not, are those subfolders not being backed up?

Also, how can I restore a file located within those sub folders?

Thanks in advance.

Task Scheduler Won't Run WBADMIN Backup

$

After several weeks of trying, the backup (wbadmin) doesn't work from the task scheduler.  When I enter the WBADMIN Start Backup command directly into a command prompt, it executes perfectly and backs up everything it's supposed to, but for some reason, when that EXACT SAME COMMAND is executed from the task scheduler it starts, then immediately stops.  I opened the Task Scheduler, clicked on "Task Scheduler Library" in the left pane, and looked at the backup job in the top window of the center pane.  The "Last Run Result" column simply showed, "(0xFFFFFFFF")".  I also clicked on the job's History Tab, which showed 7 entries at the date/time the job is set to trigger, which indicated that the task started and completed, "successfully" within the same second (i.e. 01:00:00), but absolutiely nothing is backed up, nor are there any entries for the trigger date on the backup drive.

This has happened four Sundays in a row, and each time, when I subsequently execute the WBADMIN command from a command prompt, it works correctly.  Any ideas about what I'm missing and/or doing incorrectly

2012 Essentials Backup Not Enough Space - Not Overwriting oldest

$

I have been having trouble with automated backups to a dedicated USB drive. I'm using a 3TB USB destination drive, backing up nightly. Total data and system on the server is < 1GB. I'm using all the default settings. It was working for a year, but now, after about 23 copies, it fails with:

Windows Backup encountered an error when writing data to the backup target.
Detailed error: There is not enough space on the disk

I have been using WBADMIN to delete the oldest 5 or 6 backups so it can keep going again for a few days, but it'll fill up again and not overwrite.

What should I do? I'm OK with this simple backup program, when it works. But I'm about to have the non-profit I'm helping buy some commercial program.

BTW, I didn't find any relevant posts on this specific problem.

Hi all. We're currently running  backing up our Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Server 2008 R2  through the integrated Windows Server Backup utility (backup to share folder into windows server 2012, in network this folder is available), but backup task failed:

How do I Back up a shared VHDX

$

0

hi,

I am using Server 2012 R2 on the host, and my guest cluster. I have a shared VHDX, and in the guest cluster I configure File Server role for general file server (not SOFS), this means the VHDX is owned by only one node at a time and is offline on the other nodes within the cluster. For this example I am using Windows Server Backup,  but i can't see how this will work to backup the VHDX file from other nodes. I can only see the disk as being available from the node which owns the file server role and disk, the other nodes don't show the disk as being available for backup unless i move the ownership.

do i configure backup on each node at the time the node has ownership of the disk, and then if it gets moved away from it the backup will simply fail and when it moves back it will succeed, or am i missing some more simpler?

I can't use CSV because that is for SOFS, this is just a general file server role, and apparently backing up from the host level is currently not supported for machines which use shared VHDX files.

thanks

Steve

Extended Support for Windows 2003 Server

Based on the fact that Microsoft will be stopping the support for Windows 2003 servers, we are helping one of our client to migrate all the existing applications from Windows 2003 server to Windows server 2012 R2.

In the process, we have witnessed some of the legacy applications are having compatibility issues and need some remediation which we don't think we will be able to complete by July 14th 2015. so, If our client needs extended support from Microsoft for Windows 2003 servers, what will be the Premium charge that Microsoft will be charging the customer per server per annum ?

Thanks in advance.
